I was looking at photos actually from 2010 and 2011 recently, and I was noticing the foundation that I wore. Absolutely no coverage, patchy, terrible colour. Basically everything was wrong, let’s put it that way. If only someone told me then what I know now!
Having tried and tested many different brands, for me- nothing will beat MAC when it comes to Foundation. Their range is so extensive and versatile, and it is basically one of the only brands that cater for Indian & Black women as well which I find ridiculous. Next time you go into a pharmacy or a high street make-up supplier, notice the darkest colour that they offer, it’s not impressive.
At the end of the day, regardless of your budget- When you strip down the rest of your makeup look, if your foundation type/colour is correct- the rest will always fall into place. Always.
Hopefully you would have read my last post and now you’re confident enough to identify whether or not you have Oily, Dry, Combination or Normal skin.
See below for my personal recommendations;
Let’s keep in mind that your face is already naturally shiny, and you need to counteract this on a day to day basis.
Budget- Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation
When shine is your enemy, this matte foundation is great and it gives you a medium coverage, fairly longlasting too. You don’t need to use a powder with this one, and it contains chamomile and cucumer to calm and control breakouts (Which are the most frustrating thing about this skin type). The pigment is good so you should be able to match your skin easily as well. If you have a big night out, this will stay on until the early hours.
Luxury- MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15
This foundation is my SAVIOUR! It combines a natural matte finish with medium-high coverage. It feels great on the skin, and it is long lasting (Up to 8 hours if you’re not doing anything too physically exerting). This one contains specially treated micronized pigments and soft-focus powders for a super-smooth look that helps minimize the appearance of imperfections AND it absorbs and disperses oil. Perfect.
You need a foundation that is going to nourish and give coverage at the same time. Vitamins, minerals & moisture are what you need to look for.
Budget- L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Foundation
This is a really light liquid foundation that gives you a really natural look and does wonders for your complexion! I’ve never used a cheaper foundation on anyone like this one, it gives the skin such a beautiful glow and with added light reflectors you’ll get that ‘dewy’ look that is sometimes hard to find when your skin is naturally dry. SPF 18 as well, you can’t go wrong.
Luxury- MAC Mineralize Foundation Compact
This is a really rich foundation, it helps the skin look really natural and luminous, you’ll find that after using this consistantly, your skin will feel revitalized. Medium-High coverage, this compact is buildable and is very lightweight and silky to apply. The hydration this foundation offers, is second to none. The sun protection and high comfort wear make this a very very good everyday foundation.
Keeping your skin balanced and maintaining the health and vitality are the key points in choosing a foundation for Normal Skin.
Budget- Revlon PhotoReady Makeup.
One word. INCREDIBLE. Genuinly such a fantastic foundation, one of Revlon’s best. It was designed originally with professional makeup artists in mind, and because of it’s reflectors and heavy pigmentation, the skin looks flawless. It doesn’t feel heavy on the skin either, and the finish is really silky and beautiful. Definitely invest in one of these for your makeup bag.
Luxury- MAC Studio Sculpt SPF 15
Now, if you have normal skin- you are extremely lucky because this foundation will be your best friend. This is a full coverage foundation, so the finish on your skin will be amazing. Celebrity makeup artists swear by this stuff, and it’s really luxurious. It offers a satin finish which will leave the skin looking smooth, soft and plush. VERY long lasting and water resistant as well, you don’t need much of this one on at one time either. I LOVE THIS FOUNDATION!!!!
A more difficult skin type to match foundation to, you need to make sure you’re catering for the dry/normal parts of the face and the oiliness of the T Zone.
Budget- Revlon ColorStay Foundation
This is specifically designed for Combination skin, which is great, because it does all of the work for you. Being really lightweight, it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. It boasts being able to last up to 16 hours, realistically, i’d say more like 8-10, which will sort you out for the working day! It really controls the shine as well throughout the day- You can build up the coverage if you want a fuller more ‘Made-up’ look in the evening as well.
Luxury- MAC Pro Longwear SPF 10 Foundation
A long-lasting foundation that works well with the elements of the environment, it’s very lightweight and balanced on the skin. One of my favourite foundations, because of the way it applies so smoothly onto the skin. The coverage will look quite sheer on the healthier parts of your skin and then you’ll see more medium coverage on the oiler areas of your face. Another oil control foundation, leaving your skin looking fresh and flawless.
Just remember, that with the right skincare, and the right foundation, you’re keeping your skin healthy and it will be more susceptible to change. Be careful as well, because when you change from a good quality foundation to a cheaper foundation, your skin is likely to breakout from shock. So when you try one of these foundations, make sure you stick with it.
Soon i’ll be posting a list of tips and tricks for foundation application, maximising the durability of your foundation throughout the day, and i’ll explain the difference between BB creams, Primers & Tinted Moisturisers.
Until next time-
